As stated in the large picture lingering above this post, yes, I’m taking a break from regular updates.
Here’s why:
This is my two year anniversary of making No Cash Value and maintaining this site, and looking back through the archives, I can see a multitude of ways I’ve improved as a cartoonist – which is great – but at the same time I see just as many areas that still need work, and lots of it. When I started this thing, I had NO idea what I was doing and threw a bunch of stuff together that, luckily enough, held me over until now, but there are things I’m doing wrong – fundamental things – that I should probably learn how to do the right way if I’m going to continue down this path.
A good example is driving a nail. Let’s say you have no concept of how to drive a nail, but you figure out on your own that you can use a big ass rock to drive nails, and although it’s cumbersome, and although it’s a huge inconvenience, and although you’re mangling almost every nail you drive – it works. Then, someone comes along and shows you a hammer. A better way to do things. Do you continue driving the nail with the rock? Fuck no, you don’t. I could ignore the hammer and continue driving my nails with a rock, or I could learn to use my tools and have a better finished product to show for it.
Cartooning isn’t my primary means of income; Christ, it’s not even A means of income for me right now. It’s something I do in my free time that I want to get better at so maybe someday it will be my primary source of income. But that’s kind of the catch. I want to improve my abilities as a cartoonist as quickly as possible, and at the same time, I want to become better versed in what it takes to maintain my site, to spread my work around to the people who might be interested in it, and to flat out be able to deliver a more professional product, but I don’t have unlimited time and, unfortunately, I simply won’t have enough time to juggle work, making regular updates, and putting forth the effort I want into improving my drawing, writing, the site, and charting a path for future. One of those options has to go, and since I kind of need money for food and shelter, that option is regular updates to my site.
So that’s that. How long will this take? I have no idea. As long as it takes, I guess. Does that mean this site is dead? Not at all. As I work, I’ll continue to post the occasional comic if something comes along that I just can’t sit on until I resume a normal posting schedule, and in the meantime I’ll post any sketches I think you guys might like. I’ll also continue blathering on Twitter about the comic and other important matters like what I’m eating for lunch and how many cups of coffee I’ve had.
If that sounds appealing to you in any way, look me up @LittleTMart.
Thank you so much for reading up to this point, thanks for sharing my work on Facebook and Twitter, and I hope to see you soon with some progress to show for my work!
See you when I see you.
